The research program of Tubulyze is rendered possible by the complementarity of expertise among the consortium partners. The Chair of ‘Materials Science and Engineering for Metals’ at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU-WTM) performs the 3D-printing of the titanium anode supports. The Chair ‘Chemistry of Thin Film Materials’ at FAU (FAU-CTFM) then confers them with a nanostructured surface and coats the electrocatalyst by ALD. The company Uniwell then extrudes the ion exchange membrane on the coated anodes. Subsequently, the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg (HAW Hamburg) assembles the cells and performs the electrochemical characterization. The stability of selected parts and cells is tested at the DECHEMA Research Institute, whereas the influence of electrode geometry on cell performance is modeled theoretically at the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg (HI-ERN), compared with experimental data, and used to suggest further designs to be tested in a further iteration.
